About

Esk Valley Olives and Oils Hawkes Bay New ZealandOur grove is located less than 10km from the beaches of Hawkes Bay on the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand.  The Esk River flows around three sides of our property before continuing its journey to the sea.   As a mountain fed river, the water is clear flowing and stocked with trout and other fish.   Our dark, riparian, fertile soil combined with our hot summer and cool winter climate provides ideal growing conditions for premium olives.

Block 1 was established in 1999.  The first plantings were a mix of Italian varieties:  Leccino and Frantoio, Spanish varieties: Picual and Manzanilla, and Greek Kalamata.  In 2000 Blocks 2 and 3 were established with the same varieties plus an additional Italian variety, Moraiolo from Umbria and Picholine from France.   Block 4 was planted in 2001 with more of our main Italian varieties: Leccino and Frantoio.   The last block to be planted was Block 5 in 2009 with additional Leccino and Frantoio plus Greek Koroneiki for variation.

For maximum product quality, it is essential that the time between harvesting our olives and cold pressing them is kept to the minimum.   We mechanically harvest all our olives using an hydraulic shaker attached to the front of a tractor.   We press our olives on the same day as harvesting them to prevent fruit deterioration and maximise the quality and flavour of our award-winning oils.

The majority of our olives are pressed to produce extra virgin olive oil.   A smaller quantity are brined and preserved to produce our table olives and tapenades.   Most of our olive oils are certified single variety extra virgin olive oils.  We also produce grove blends and a limited range of flavoured olive oils:  Yuzu, Garlic, Lemon, and Chilli & Lime.

Following our rejuvenation program in 2014, our Vintage 2017, Block 5 Grove Blend was carefully crafted from predominantly  Tuscan varieties:  Frantoio and Leccino.  The finished product is a mildly fruity, nutty flavored oil with a light peppery finish.  Some vintages we add a dash of Greek Koroneiki for additional fruitiness.   Because of it’s versatility and wide appeal our Block 5 Grove Blend has become our flagship extra virgin olive oil.

When you visit us at our grove and beautifully landscaped gardens, you will be more than welcome to wander through our trees, along the banks of the Esk River and enjoy the peaceful tranquillity of our property.  You might even like to bring a picnic and enjoy a swim in the river.
